Provincial Milk Bank

The Provincial Milk Bank at BC Women’s Hospital supports babies and children with donor breast milk to help them fight disease and infection.

About

When breast milk from a baby’s parent is not available, donor milk is the next best thing. Human milk has active beneficial properties that provide babies – especially those who are very sick – with antibodies to fight disease and infection.

The Provincial Milk Bank, located at BC Women's Hospital, has operated continuously since 1974 and is a founding member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. We have screened over 10,000 donors, processed over 88,000 litres (3 million ounces) of donated milk and have supported thousands of babies and children.

Currently, the Provincial Milk Bank ships milk to over 24 hospitals including all 14 neonatal intensive care units in BC.

The demand for donor milk is high and often exceeds supply. We always need new donors.

Donate and receive

Receive milk

If you need donor milk after your baby leaves the hospital, your doctor, midwife or nurse needs to fax a prescription to the Provincial Milk Bank at: 604-875-2371.

Donor milk is provided to your baby at no cost while in hospital. After leaving the hospital, if you still need donor milk, we charge a processing fee to offset the cost associated with milk processing. The current rate is $5 for 120 mls (4 oz.)

The milk supply depends on how many donors we have. Our supply varies as donors retire on an ongoing basis as they wean their babies. When supply is low, we may not be able to meet all requests and prioritize providing milk to the sickest babies. Every baby using donor milk needs to have an alternate feeding plan.

Hospitals may order donor milk. Please see the Health Professionals Milk Bank Resources page for details.

There are two ways for individuals to receive milk from the milk bank:

Pick-up at BC Women's Hospital

This is available to patients who can pick up from BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver. Please follow these steps:

  • Hours for placing orders are from 8 to 11:30 a.m., Monday to Friday. We are closed on statutory holidays.

Please call the Provincial Milk Bank to arrange an alternative time if these hours are challenging for you.

Donate milk

We follow the Human Milk Banking Association of North America Standards. Each donor must complete a screening process before we can accept and utilize their milk. If you answer yes to all the below requirements, please fill in our online expression of interest form.

You can most likely donate milk if you:
  • Are in good general health
  • Have more breast milk than you need for your own baby. We ask that each donor donates at least 4.2 litres (150 ounces) of milk over a period of time. This helps to cover the costs of screening.
  • Are bereaved. We accept any amount of appropriately stored milk from bereaved donors, assuming they have completed the screening process. You can learn more by reading our lactation after loss (PDF) pamphlet.
  • Are willing to have a blood test to rule out certain diseases.
  • Are not taking certain medications, including antidepressants and galactagogues (medications that increase milk production). Progestin-only birth control pills, thyroid replacement hormones, human insulin, prenatal vitamins, iron or calcium, and other medications are acceptable (check with the Milk Bank in advance).
  • Live in Canada
  • Can drop off your milk at BC Women’s Hospital or a milk collection depot, or pay to have your milk couriered to the hospital. Please check with the Provincial Milk Bank as there are areas of BC where shipping may be covered.
Depending on the number of prospective donors who have contacted us, it may take us a week or two to get back to enquiries.

  • After you make a donor enquiry, a screening nurse will contact you by phone or in-person.
  • If the screening nurse identifies no issues, BC Women’s Hospital will send a set of screening forms to you by email, mail or fax. These forms include a medical history sheet, consent to contact your primary care health care provider, information on blood screening and an agreement to donate.
  • After you return the forms, our team will review them, then contact your primary health care provider to order blood work. You can do this at a local community blood lab, the cost of which is covered by the Provincial Health Plan.
  • Once we receive results, the Provincial Milk Bank will contact you.
